Scope and Purpose

“Fundamental improvements are needed in existing [Earth] observation and information systems because they only loosely connect three key elements: (1) the raw observations that produce information; (2) the analyses, forecasts, and models that provide timely and coherent syntheses of otherwise disparate information; and (3) the decision processes that use those analyses and forecasts to produce actions with direct societal benefits.” (Earth Science and Applications from Space: National Imperatives for the Next Decade and Beyond, National Research Council)

This mini-workshop is intended to be a forum for technology developers, Earth scientists, and researchers in Information Technology to discuss the technical challenges arising from the goal of forging a tighter connection of observation systems, data analysis tools and decision-making to support Earth science research and applications in support of society.

Topics considered for this forum may include, but are not limited to:

• Core IT capabilities for enabling a tighter connection between collection, processing and dissemination of data and knowledge
• Relevant technologies for developing these capabilities
• Architectures for Earth observation data acquisition and processing systems
• Applications of Earth observation systems for science and society
• Technical and ‘cultural’ obstacles to infusing new information technologies into Earth observation systems
• Autonomous components, subsystems and techniques for improved performance of Earth Observation systems
• New and future products and use-cases arising from novel IT solutions for Earth Science

Mini-workshop Format

The mini-workshop will be held for a single day during SMC-IT. It will consist of a combination of invited talks, technical presentations, and informal discussions.
