OVERVIEW

Please mark your calendars! SMC-IT 2009 is coming up just around the corner!

Advanced Early Bird Registration is now open until June 15, 2009, at which time regular registration will commence.  Please consider registering early at a significant cost savings!

The successful inaugural meeting of the International Conference on Space Mission Challenges for Information Technology (SMC-IT) was held on July 13-16, 2003, in Pasadena with over 330 attendees drawn from space agencies, national labs, defense, academia, and aerospace and related industry.  This was followed by the Second IEEE SMC-IT 2006, July 17-20, 2006, in Pasadena, CA. As with the first two instantiations of the conference series, this forum has provided an excellent opportunity for system designers, engineers, scientists, practitioners, and space explorers to foster technical interchange on all software and hardware aspects of IT applications in space missions.

SMC-IT 2009 will continue its focus on current IT practice and challenges as well as emerging information technologies with applicability for future space missions. IT in all aspects of the space mission will be explored, especially those of a cross-cutting multi-disciplinary nature. This includes ground systems, science data processing, software engineering and reliable software, engineering and development tools, modeling and simulation methods, human and robotic systems interfaces, high performance computing, autonomous systems, image processing and visualization, operations, and telecommunications. The entire IT lifecycle of mission development will also be covered, such as conceptual design, engineering tools development, integration and test, operations, science analysis, quality control, and outreach.

The confirmed Keynote Speakers include:

Anant Agarwal, MIT & Associate Director of CSAIL
   Tiled Multicore Processors

Rupak Biswas, NASA Ames Research Center
NASA Supercomputing and It’s Impact on Agency Missions

Peter Hughes, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Challenges and Accomplishments in Space Science at NASA’s GSFC

Hans Koenigsmann, SpaceX
Falcon 1 Flight 4:  From Omelek to Orbit

Robert Manning, JPL
Stealing Success (tales of successes and near misses on Mars robotic missions)

Jeffrey Norris, JPL
Space Invaders! (applying video game technology to driving rovers on Mars)

Kanna Rajan, MBARI
Autonomy: From Outer to Inner Space

Rami Razouk, Aerospace Corporation
Software Challenges Facing National Security Space

There will be over 50 contributed papers plus 9 mini-workshops encompassing more than 80 speakers, assorted technical demonstrations, an industry exhibition and speakers forum, a student space exploration game competition, and a special student workshop track for students to present on university level space IT projects and research.

Following the successful introduction in 2006, Mini-Workshops in particular are returning to SMC-IT 2009 in larger numbers and diversity. They run from one to three days in length and include the following themes:

  • Software Reliability in Space Missions
  • Information Technologies for Effective management of Earth Observation System
  • Knowledge Management
  • Multi-Core Flight Computers and Software
  • International Workshop on Software Health Management
  • IT for Climate Research
  • Human Robotic Interfaces: Concepts, Challenges and Applications
  • Autonomic and Autonomous Space Exploration Systems
  • 6th International Workshop on Planning and Scheduling for Space (IWPSS)

Details of each mini-workshop program can be found on the web site.

NIGHT OUT EVENT:

Wednesday evening, July 22, 2009 we will be holding our SMC-IT 2009 Conference Night Out event at The Petersen Auto Museum in Los Angeles. This includes a reception and banquet in the Grand Salon that includes a variety of famous automobiles from Hollywood movies, movie stars, race cars, show cars, and experimental cars that never reached production.  At the end, a very special thought provoking dinner talk on “robotic driving on other planetary bodies” promises to bring the evening to an exciting close.

Tickets are included in full registration and additional tickets for guests can be purchased either online or at the SMC-IT Conference onsite registration booth.

*Note: Students' registration fees do not include the JPL Dinner event. Tickets may be purchased separately through our website.

VENUE:

The conference will be held at the Pasadena Conference Center, which recently reopened after a two year renovation and expansion effort, making it larger, more modern, and easy to access.  It is conveniently located near the historic "Old Town" shopping area of Pasadena, California, home of the Tournament of Roses Parade, Rose Bowl, Caltech, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Hotel, travel, registration and other logistical information are available on the conference web site.
